You’re Too Close to See It

I was sitting across from my therapist, weighed down by guilt and frustration. My ex-wife had betrayed me, and even though the relationship was over, I couldn’t stop blaming myself.

“How did I not see it?” I kept asking. “The signs were there. I should’ve known.”

Without a word, my therapist scribbled something on his yellow notepad. Then he leaned in and held it right up to my face — so close it almost touched my nose.

“Read this,” he said.

I squinted. I couldn’t make out a single word.

“It’s too close,” I said, confused.

He pulled it back a few inches. And then I read it clearly:

“You’re too close to see it.”

That moment hit me like a wave. I had been in it — too entangled, too hopeful, too invested — to see the truth. But now, with distance, it all made sense.

It wasn’t about being foolish. It was about being human.
And with that simple realization, I finally stopped blaming myself. I started to let go.
