My Dad Called My Baby a Mistake—My Mom Made It Harder to Move On
Having an unplanned child can turn your whole world upside down. For me, it brought joy I didn’t expect — but also pain from the people I hoped would support me the most.
I had my daughter six months ago. She wasn’t planned, but once I found out, I decided to keep her. I was ready to embrace motherhood with all its challenges.
But my family didn’t take it well — especially my dad. When I told him, he didn’t yell or argue. Instead, he just went silent. That silence was louder than any fight.
One evening at dinner, my baby started fussing like babies do. But then, my dad muttered loud enough for everyone to hear, “Guess that’s what happens when you keep an accident.”
That broke something inside me. I pushed my chair back and left the table with tears streaming down my face.
Later, my mom called me, worried. She said, “Your dad is trying to apologize but doesn’t know how.” I was numb, still hurting from his words, but something in her voice made me pause. Maybe he did feel regret.
I didn’t know how to respond. Part of me wanted to shut him out — to protect myself and my daughter. But another part remembered the softness in his eyes when he thought no one was watching.
Should I reach out? Should I forgive? Or do I protect my heart first?
