My Ex Left His Estate To Me Instead Of His Wife

I was with Jack for 20 years. We never married. I left him three years ago after he cheated. Six months later, he married another woman.
I moved on, had a daughter, Iris, with my boyfriend. Jack still texted me on birthdays but accused me of cheating when he found out about Iris. I never responded.
Then Jack died in a car crash. Soon after, I was stunned to learn he left his entire $700,000 estate to me—not his wife or kids.
Jack’s wife, Lauren, demanded the money for their children. I was torn until I found a letter from Jack. He thanked me for standing by him despite his flaws and said he trusted me to do the right thing with the money.
I set up a trust for his kids, $500,000 reserved for them when they turn 21, and kept $200,000 for my daughter and myself.
Lauren didn’t thank me but eventually apologized, admitting she’d been too angry to see what I’d done.
Years later, Jack’s AA sponsor thanked me for honoring his last wishes without drama.
I wrote a letter to Jack’s children, telling them their father loved them quietly, despite his mistakes.
Now, watching Iris play, I know forgiveness isn’t forgetting. Doing the right thing can be hard, but peace is worth more than money.
