Trump floats ‘magic paint’ plan for Eisenhower Executive Office Building as preservationists raise red flags
Donald Trump has reportedly suggested repainting the Eisenhower Executive Office Building (EEOB) next to the White House using a “magic paint” or modern silicone-based coating to turn its dark granite exterior bright white. The idea is aimed at refreshing the building’s appearance and highlighting its architectural details as part of broader White House renovation discussions.
However, preservation experts are warning against the plan. They argue that coating historic granite could trap moisture, cause long-term damage, and permanently alter the building’s appearance. Because the EEOB is a protected National Historic Landmark, any major exterior change would require careful review, testing, and consideration of long-term preservation risks versus cosmetic benefits.
