My phone rang one evening, and to my surprise, it was my five-year-old granddaughter, Lila.<\/p>\n
“Hi Grandma… can I sleep at your house tonight?” she whispered.<\/p>\n
Immediately, I knew something was wrong. Lila was normally energetic and chatty, always talking about unicorns, dragons, or whatever new adventure she had imagined. She never called me by herself.<\/p>\n
“Of course, sweetheart,” I said. “Is Mommy there?”<\/p>\n
“Yes. But she’s pretending.”<\/p>\n
“Pretending what?”<\/p>\n
“That she’s not scared.”<\/p>\n

“Lila called me! She said you were scared!”<\/p>\n
Emma looked exhausted.<\/p>\n
Then she pointed at the toilet.<\/p>\n
“Two of them.”<\/p>\n
“Two what?”<\/p>\n
“Spiders.”<\/p>\n
I stared.<\/p>\n
“Spiders?”<\/p>\n
“Tangerine-sized spiders.”<\/p>\n
For a moment I couldn’t even process what she was saying.<\/p>\n
I had raced across town convinced there was some terrible emergency.<\/p>\n
Emma sighed and sat on the closed toilet lid.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Lila finally explained.<\/p>\n
“Mommy said it wasn’t a big deal,” she told me. “But she kept saying, ‘Oh no, oh no, oh no’ when she thought I couldn’t hear.”<\/p>\n
Emma laughed and covered her face.<\/p>\n
“Okay,” she admitted. “You caught me.”<\/p>\n
“I didn’t want to scare her.”<\/p>\n
Lila grinned proudly.<\/p>\n
“You looked funny.”<\/p>\n
The tension finally broke, and all three of us started laughing.<\/p>\n
Later, we made popcorn and sat together in our pajamas, joking about the spider invasion. None of us were brave enough to reopen the bathroom door.<\/p>\n
That night, I stayed over.<\/p>\n
Lila dragged her sleeping bag into the guest room and curled up under her favorite blanket.<\/p>\n
As I tucked her in, she smiled sleepily and whispered:<\/p>\n

I kissed her forehead.<\/p>\n
“That’s a very good plan.”<\/p>\n
