One night, I heard my 10-year-old son whisper in his sleep, “Dad, what if Mom finds out we’re lying about soccer practice?”

I froze. His biological father had died years ago, so he could only mean his stepfather, Derek.

The next day, I discovered there was no soccer practice. Suspicious, I followed Derek and my son the following week.

The evidence was taken to court, and Derek lost his legal rights to my son. Meredith disappeared from our lives.

I changed everything, protected my son’s inheritance, and got him professional support.

That night, as I tucked him into bed, he smiled and whispered:

“I’m glad you found out, Mom.”

And so was I.
