v

My stomach dropped.

My mother.

I hadn’t heard that name spoken seriously in years.

We had always believed she died when I was nine.

A car accident.

That’s what Dad told us.

That’s what everyone told us.

I looked at the photograph again.

Then I noticed something behind the woman.

A wooden door.

It looked familiar.

I suddenly remembered something from childhood.

Dad’s study.

There had always been a large bookshelf against one wall.

I ran downstairs.

“Emma!”

She came into the hallway.

“What?”

“Does Dad have a hidden room?”

Her face changed immediately.

“What?”

“A hidden room behind the bookshelf.”

She stared at me.

Then she whispered:

“Not anymore.”

“What does that mean?”

Before she could answer, the doorbell rang.

We both froze.

Richard entered moments later.

He was carrying a black leather briefcase.

“I thought this would be a difficult day,” he said quietly.

“It is.”

He looked at me.

“I know.”

Then he placed the briefcase on the table.

“Your father asked me to deliver this.”

I opened it.

Inside were legal documents.

The will.

Dad had changed it six months earlier.

The house would go to Emma.

The family business would go to me.

But there was one strange condition.

Neither of us could sell anything for one year.

“Why?” I asked.

Richard shook his head.

“Your father didn’t explain.”

Then he reached into the briefcase again.

He pulled out an old brass key.

“This was also left for you.”

I stared at it.

“What does it open?”

Richard looked directly into my eyes.

“A room.”

Emma stepped forward.

“You knew?”

Richard said nothing.

“How long have you known about the room?”

He slowly stood.

“Your father believed you weren’t ready.”

“Ready for what?”

He walked toward the door.

Then stopped.

“Sometimes,” he said, “the truth destroys the family that the lie was protecting.”

He left.

That night, Emma and I searched the house.

Nothing.

Until we entered Dad’s study.

The bookshelf was slightly crooked.

We pushed it.

It moved.

Behind it was a narrow wooden door.

The brass key fit perfectly.

The door opened.

Inside was a small room filled with boxes.

Old photographs.

Letters.

Bank statements.

Newspapers.

And on the floor was a newspaper from twenty-two years ago.

The headline made my blood run cold.

LOCAL WOMAN DISAPPEARS AFTER CAR CRASH.

The woman’s name was our mother.

But underneath the headline was a sentence I had never seen before.

NO BODY HAS EVER BEEN RECOVERED.

I looked at Emma.

She covered her mouth.

Our mother had never been found.

Which meant one terrifying possibility remained.

She might not have died.

v My stomach dropped.
