Chloe’s parents always looked down on her because she worked as a custodian at Hartwell State University. When she invited them to a gala where she was being honored, her father mocked her, asking if the award was for “how fast you mop toilets.” Her mother even told her to call her job “administration” so people at church wouldn’t know.

What her parents didn’t know was that Chloe had secretly spent nine years working and studying at Hartwell, using an employee tuition benefit. She eventually earned a degree in economics with a 3.88 GPA while continuing to work as a custodian. She was then selected for Hartwell’s Distinguished Staff Service Award, with Professor Everett Hail—her father’s favorite author—presenting it.

After seeing the award ceremony, her father suddenly began calling her repeatedly. Then her sister Megan confessed an even deeper secret: Chloe had actually been accepted to Hartwell at 18. Her father intercepted the acceptance letter and threw it away because the family had used the college fund to pay for Megan’s education. Megan had secretly kept the letter for 16 years.

Chloe eventually confronted her parents, but instead of letting them rewrite her story, she chose to move forward. At graduation, she became Hartwell’s first staff representative to address the graduating class and spoke about finding “side doors” to your dreams. She later took a new role helping other university workers use the same tuition program that changed her life.

Takeaway: Chloe turned years of being underestimated into an education and career she built for herself—and ultimately stopped needing her family’s approval to recognize her own worth.

Chloe’s parents always looked down on her because she worked as a custodian at Hartwell State University.
