The letter revealed that I had already protected the apartment by placing it into a trust.

Brenda went pale.

“You did what?” she whispered.

“Protected what belongs to me.”

Before she could say another word, three loud knocks came at the door.

I opened it.

Two police officers stood outside, along with my lawyer—and Brenda’s niece, Carla.

Carla stepped forward.

“Emily, you need to know the truth. Brenda didn’t move in because of my children. She came here because she wanted your apartment.”

She handed my lawyer a folder containing financial records and copies of documents Brenda had been hiding.

Then came the biggest shock.

My lawyer discovered that Brenda had known about my inheritance before Brandon and I even met.

She had actually arranged for Brandon to meet me at a charity event.

She had known I owned the apartment.

Brandon stared at his mother in disbelief.

“You used me?”

Brenda finally admitted it.

She wanted the apartment because its value had risen to more than a million dollars.

The police arrested Brenda over the alleged fraud and forged-document scheme.

Brandon cooperated with the investigation, but I still couldn’t forgive him.

During the divorce, he admitted he had known for a year that his mother wanted him to gain ownership of my apartment.

I removed my wedding ring.

“I loved you,” I told him. “But you chose to betray my trust.”

Eight months later, our divorce was final.

I kept the apartment.

But almost a year later, my lawyer gave me one final letter—from my father.

It said:

“Choose people who would still care about you if you had nothing.”

I cried because my father had protected me long before I knew I needed protection.

Eventually, I sold the apartment and started a new life.

I learned one thing:

Sometimes protecting your life means letting the wrong people walk away.

And when they do, you close the door behind them—and never look back.

The letter revealed that I had already protected the apartment by placing it into a trust.
