She passed away when I was 5. My dad was already married to my stepmom at the time. I never really bonded with her, mostly because I could sense some tension between her and my mom before my mom passed. After my mom died, things got harder\u2014especially with my stepmom saying things like, <em data-start=\"519\" data-end=\"554\">\u201cYou\u2019re finally where you belong\u201d<\/em> or <em data-start=\"558\" data-end=\"600\">\u201cI\u2019m so happy you\u2019re my little boy now.\u201d<\/em> It made me uncomfortable, like she was trying to erase my mom.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"665\" data-end=\"1001\">My dad wasn\u2019t very hands-on, even though he liked to pretend he was. If I expressed how uncomfortable I felt, he\u2019d just tell me to <em data-start=\"796\" data-end=\"819\">\u201caccept being loved.\u201d<\/em> It didn\u2019t help that just two months after my mom died, my stepmom gave birth to the first of my three half-sisters. Everything changed fast, and I was grieving and feeling isolated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1003\" data-end=\"1450\">My stepmom always tried to get closer to me\u2014sometimes by hiring babysitters to look after my sisters so she could spend the whole day focused on bonding with me. I know it hurt her when I kept my distance, but it hurt me more when she\u2019d say things like <em data-start=\"1256\" data-end=\"1275\">\u201cYou\u2019re mine now\u201d<\/em> or talk to me like a toddler, calling herself \u201cMommy\u201d and using baby talk with me until I was nearly 12. I think she thought treating me like a baby would win me over faster.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1452\" data-end=\"1691\">She also insisted on calling me by my middle name, James\u2014her dad\u2019s name\u2014instead of my actual first name. At one point, she kept asking if I\u2019d consider changing my name to James officially so I could be \u201cGrandpa\u2019s junior.\u201d I always said no.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1693\" data-end=\"2011\">When I was around 8 or 9, she and my dad even tried to legally change both my first and last names. The first time, the court didn\u2019t go through with it because I wasn\u2019t there, and the judge said I should be present. So I went the next time and told the judge I didn\u2019t want to change my name\u2014and that was the end of it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2013\" data-end=\"2366\">But it\u2019s always bothered my stepmom that I don\u2019t share their last name. She has three daughters, and she keeps saying she wants <em data-start=\"2141\" data-end=\"2157\">\u201cher only son\u201d<\/em> to have the same name as the rest of the family. A few days ago, she brought it up again\u2014asking me to reconsider the name change and suggesting I could surprise her with it as a Christmas or birthday present.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2368\" data-end=\"2524\">I told her I\u2019m not changing my name for her, and that I don\u2019t see her as my mom or myself as her \u201cboy.\u201d She started crying and called me spoiled and bratty.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m 16M, and I\u2019ve always had my mom\u2019s last name since my parents were never married.
