My ex-husband and his wife recently welcomed a newborn. Last night, my 16-year-old daughter, who lives with them, called me in tears. She told me that she had been assigned the \u201cnight shift\u201d with the baby because her stepmother told her,\u00a0\u201cYou can\u2019t live with us for free; you need to earn it.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Hearing this, I was furious. But rather than reacting impulsively, I decided to take action\u2014I arranged for a surprise visit from Child Protective Services (CPS) the following morning.<\/p>\n
