She seemed polite, maybe a bit too cheerful\u2014but harmless. At least, that\u2019s what I thought&#8230;<br data-start=\"378\" data-end=\"381\" \/>Then my husband started <strong data-start=\"405\" data-end=\"421\">disappearing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"424\" data-end=\"590\">First, it was casual\u2014\u201cI\u2019m going to help the new neighbor with her boxes.\u201d<br data-start=\"497\" data-end=\"500\" \/>But then it became every day. Morning. Afternoon. Even evenings.<br data-start=\"564\" data-end=\"567\" \/><strong data-start=\"567\" data-end=\"590\">Every. Single. Day.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"592\" data-end=\"696\">I tried to stay calm. Maybe he was just being helpful&#8230; But deep down, a storm was brewing in my chest.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"698\" data-end=\"921\">One day, I glanced out the window and saw them\u2014<strong data-start=\"745\" data-end=\"805\">on her porch, laughing, sitting close&#8230; like newlyweds.<\/strong> My heart sank.<br data-start=\"820\" data-end=\"823\" \/><strong data-start=\"823\" data-end=\"887\">I couldn\u2019t sleep that night. I kept replaying it in my head.<\/strong> Was I being paranoid\u2014or betrayed?<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"923\" data-end=\"1066\">The next morning, I had enough. I put on my coat, grabbed a box of cookies (for cover), and <strong data-start=\"1015\" data-end=\"1051\">marched right over to her house.<\/strong> I was shaking.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1068\" data-end=\"1231\">I rang the bell. She opened the door, that same sweet smile on her face. Before I could say a word, a little boy came running up behind her yelling\u2014<br data-start=\"1216\" data-end=\"1219\" \/><strong data-start=\"1219\" data-end=\"1231\">\u201cDaddy!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1233\" data-end=\"1505\">I stood frozen.<br data-start=\"1248\" data-end=\"1251\" \/>Not only was the boy <strong data-start=\"1272\" data-end=\"1283\">his son<\/strong>&#8230;<br data-start=\"1286\" data-end=\"1289\" \/><strong data-start=\"1289\" data-end=\"1360\">She was his daughter\u2014from a relationship he had long before we met.<\/strong><br data-start=\"1360\" data-end=\"1363\" \/>He had just found out and was trying to build a relationship with her and his grandson.<br data-start=\"1450\" data-end=\"1453\" \/><strong data-start=\"1453\" data-end=\"1505\">He wasn\u2019t cheating\u2014he was reuniting with family.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1507\" data-end=\"1667\">I felt the earth shift beneath me.<br data-start=\"1541\" data-end=\"1544\" \/>And in that moment, I realized how powerful assumptions can be&#8230; and how much love can hide in the most unexpected places.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When our new neighbor moved in, I didn\u2019t think much of it.
