But according to fire departments across the country, people are making a <em data-start=\"482\" data-end=\"493\">dangerous<\/em> mistake that could cost them their home \u2014 or worse.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"547\" data-end=\"631\">\ud83d\udd25 <strong data-start=\"550\" data-end=\"631\">Firefighters are urging everyone: Never plug space heaters into power strips.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"633\" data-end=\"895\">Why? Because power strips <strong data-start=\"659\" data-end=\"709\">aren\u2019t built to handle high-wattage appliances<\/strong>. Space heaters draw a huge amount of electricity, and when plugged into a basic strip or extension cord, they can <strong data-start=\"824\" data-end=\"846\">overheat instantly<\/strong>, melt the plastic, and ignite a fire in seconds.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"897\" data-end=\"1105\">\u201cWe\u2019ve seen it time and time again,\u201d says Captain James Holloway of the Springfield Fire Department. \u201cA family thinks they\u2019re staying warm, but that heat source is sitting on top of a potential fire starter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1107\" data-end=\"1139\">And it\u2019s not just space heaters.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1141\" data-end=\"1213\">\ud83d\udeab <strong data-start=\"1144\" data-end=\"1213\">Here\u2019s a quick list of what should <em data-start=\"1181\" data-end=\"1188\">never<\/em> go into a power strip:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1214\" data-end=\"1331\">\n<li data-start=\"1214\" data-end=\"1231\">\n<p data-start=\"1216\" data-end=\"1231\">Space heaters<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1232\" data-end=\"1246\">\n<p data-start=\"1234\" data-end=\"1246\">Microwaves<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1247\" data-end=\"1259\">\n<p data-start=\"1249\" data-end=\"1259\">Toasters<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1260\" data-end=\"1280\">\n<p data-start=\"1262\" data-end=\"1280\">Air conditioners<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1281\" data-end=\"1313\">\n<p data-start=\"1283\" data-end=\"1313\">Hair dryers or curling irons<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1314\" data-end=\"1331\">\n<p data-start=\"1316\" data-end=\"1331\">Refrigerators<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1333\" data-end=\"1439\">All of these devices should be plugged <strong data-start=\"1372\" data-end=\"1403\">directly into a wall outlet<\/strong>, preferably on a dedicated circuit.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1441\" data-end=\"1525\">\ud83d\udca1 <strong data-start=\"1444\" data-end=\"1456\">Pro tip:<\/strong> If the plug or strip feels hot to the touch \u2014 unplug it immediately.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1527\" data-end=\"1682\">Firefighters recommend checking your power strips regularly and replacing older or damaged ones.
