My older brother and I were inseparable after our parents passed away.
He promised me we would always<\/em> stay together.
\u201cNo matter what,\u201d he used to say.
And for a while\u2026 he meant it.<\/p>\n

He helped me find work, helped me move into my own apartment.
He called me every night just to check on me.
He was my only family left.<\/p>\n

Then, little by little, he started to disappear.<\/p>\n

First, he would miss a few calls.
Then he stopped answering completely.
His door was always locked.
His curtains always closed.
And when I asked if everything was okay, he would just say:<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m fine. Don\u2019t come over.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

One night, I couldn\u2019t take it anymore.
I drove to his house.
His car was outside.
The lights were off.

I knocked once.

I knocked again, harder.
Still nothing.<\/p>\n

I was about to leave when I heard his voice.<\/p>\n

From the other side of the door:<\/p>\n

I froze.
It was<\/em> his voice\u2026 but weak, shaky, like he hadn\u2019t slept in days.<\/p>\n

Me: \u201cOpen the door. It\u2019s me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Silence.<\/p>\n

Then the lock clicked.
The door opened only a few inches.
Just enough for me to see one of his eyes.<\/p>\n

It didn\u2019t look like him.<\/em>
His eyes were swollen, red, terrified.<\/p>\n

Me: \u201cWhat\u2019s happening to you?\u201d<\/p>\n

He spoke in a whisper, barely moving his lips:<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not alone.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

My heart dropped.<\/p>\n

Me: \u201cWho\u2019s in there?\u201d<\/p>\n

He shook his head slowly.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re listening.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Me: \u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n

He swallowed hard. I could see him shaking.<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t come back here. Ever.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

And just like that, he slammed the door.<\/p>\n

I stood there on the porch, cold, confused, sick to my stomach.
I called his name.
No answer.
No sound at all.<\/p>\n

I walked back to my car\u2026 numb.<\/p>\n

That night, I reported a welfare concern to the police.
They checked his house.<\/p>\n

No one was inside.
No signs of struggle.
No signs of him.
Just an empty house.<\/strong><\/p>\n

But the police told me something I can\u2019t forget:<\/p>\n

The locks were inside.
The windows were sealed shut.
And there was no possible way<\/strong> someone could have left the house without being seen.<\/p>\n

My brother was gone.<\/strong><\/p>\n

And to this day\u2026 I still don\u2019t know if he walked out on his own\u2026<\/p>\n
