I\u2019m divorced, and my 18-year-old daughter recently walked into the living room, dropped onto the couch, and said without any hesitation, \u201cYou have to rent me an apartment.\u201d I nearly choked on my tea.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s some background. After the divorce, my ex-husband decided it would be \u201ceasier\u201d to send money directly to our daughter instead of going through me. At first, I didn\u2019t mind\u2014it meant less conflict between us. But over time, it completely changed her attitude.<\/p>\n

Instead of asking for things, she started demanding them. Clothes, gadgets, nights out\u2014if I said no, she\u2019d just go to her dad. Wanting to be the \u201cfun parent,\u201d he usually gave in.<\/p>\n

But demanding her own apartment at 18? That was a whole new level.<\/p>\n
