A Message I Almost Missed

Around this time last year, in June 2021, I lost my 91-year-old great-grandmother. Her passing shattered me and pulled me into another bout of depression. But over time, I began to heal. Still, not a day goes by that I don’t think about her—our last conversation, the final time I saw her, the weight of her absence.

Just a few minutes ago, something unexpected happened.

I was tidying up my room, going through a plastic storage bin with three drawers—where I keep personal items like letters, cards, and keepsakes. My radio sits on top of it, untouched. I opened the top drawer, the one filled with letters, and right there on top was an envelope. It held a birthday letter from both my grandmother and great-grandmother. But what struck me was what I saw on the back of the envelope—something I hadn’t noticed before. Written neatly across the back were the words: “Mema loves you too.”

I was stunned. I had always thought the envelope was blank. But here it was—her words, so simple yet so powerful, reaching out to me when I needed it most. I picked it up, stared at it, and within seconds, the tears came. I sobbed.

It made everything feel so real. The last two years, with the chaos of the pandemic, have felt like a blur—almost like a fever dream. But that small message, so full of love, cut through the fog. I will never forget how deeply she loved me. And how deeply I still love her.

If you made it this far, thank you. It truly means a lot to me.
