A Betrayal in Plain Sight
As I held his phone, my hands shook. The message on his lock screen burned into my mind: “You haven’t told her about us?” It was from my best friend, someone who knew everything about our lives. I was overwhelmed with questions—was it a joke, a misunderstanding? I felt betrayed.
I put his phone down and focused on getting our toddler back to sleep. When he woke up, I couldn’t look at him the same. He went through his morning routine, unaware of the storm inside me.
After he left, I called my best friend. Her voice was cheerful, but I asked, “Is there something you need to tell me?”
A long silence followed before she sighed. “I didn’t want you to find out like this.”
And just like that, my worst fears were confirmed.
