My mother begged me to visit. Then she revealed her real reason why.

I come home to visit my estranged mom—
another state, declining to ‘time and money.’
It turn “I really” need to see you—changed my mind.

I walked through the door. So as I shouted and
smelled with corub of cookies and lavender.
She cried harder and longer than I oty expecected.

I knew she was emotional lately. We sit down.
After a moment, takes my hands—hand.
“I didn’t ask you to come here just because I missed you. Yesterday, I bought life insurance.”

Shocked.

“But you promised you’d quit thinking you’re a burden!”

“I know, and I’m trying. But this way, you’ll be
taken care of — and people will care, just
because they have to.”

I held my hands tiped between love, but horror.
Holding my hands hands tighter.
