The Birthday Calls

My son just turned 6 last week. Ever since he was born, we’ve kept birthdays small — just close family, a homemade cake, and balloons.
But this year, he kept asking when “the man with the blue hat” would call. I thought it was something from a cartoon or a game, so I brushed it off.
Then on the night of his birthday, our landline rang — which is strange, because we haven’t used it in years. I picked it up out of curiosity.
A man’s voice, calm and deep, said:
“Tell Liam happy birthday. I’m proud of him.”
Then he hung up.
I froze. No one we know talks like that. And we never told anyone our landline still worked.
The next day, I asked Liam who the man in the blue hat was.
He said, “He visits me in my dreams. He said he used to know you.”
