What Princess Diana ‘Always Said’ About Prince William and Prince Harry — and Why It Hurts Now

Princess Diana always emphasized the bond between her sons, believing Prince Harry would support Prince William in his future role as king. Biographer Andrew Morton says there’s “no doubt” she would’ve acted as a peacemaker between them.

But 28 years after Diana’s death, William and Harry remain estranged. Once inseparable, the brothers are now worlds apart, divided by royal tensions that intensified in 2020 when Harry and Meghan stepped back from royal duties. Since then, personal clashes, public interviews, and Harry’s memoir Spare have deepened the rift.

Despite the fallout, both brothers remain committed to honoring their mother’s legacy. William continues her work with the homeless, while Harry advocates for AIDS awareness and youth support in Africa. Both are raising their children with a focus on authenticity — a value historian Amanda Foreman calls “pure Diana.”

They’ve also passed down her name: Princess Charlotte and Princess Lilibet each carry Diana’s as a middle name. Though their paths diverge, Diana’s influence still unites them — in parenting, in causes, and in memory.

As Morton reflects, “If she had been around, they would have worked things out differently.”
