I Adopted a Baby Girl After a Long Wait & 20 Years Later, Her Birth Mother Knocked on My Door — Story of the Day

It was Pam’s 20th birthday. I’d decorated the house and was waiting for her when the doorbell rang. But it wasn’t Pam—it was a tearful stranger asking for my daughter.

She stepped in and stared at Pam’s photo. “She’s my daughter,” she whispered.

Before I could respond, Pam arrived. I froze as the woman said, “I’m your mother.”

Pam turned to me, confused. I handed her the adoption folder I’d kept hidden for 20 years.

“You’re adopted,” I said quietly. Pam was devastated.

Then the woman revealed, “I was in a coma when she was born. I just woke up five months ago.”

Overwhelmed, Pam ran out.

In the silence that followed, the woman—Marlene—and I sat together. I showed her Pam’s childhood photos and shared memories.

Then, we heard a car pulling in.

Pam was back.
