So there I was, casually strolling through the mall, when I spotted who I thought was my girlfriend walking ahead of me. Same hair, same outfit style, same familiar little bounce in her step. Naturally, I decided to sneak up and surprise her in the most boyfriend-y way possible.
I wrapped my arms around her from behind and whispered, “Guess who?”
Well she guessed “A complete stranger,” because it wasn’t my girlfriend.
She screamed, I panicked, and suddenly we were in the middle of the most awkward moment of my life. I immediately apologized and tried to explain the mistake, but she looked understandably freaked out. And to make things even worse (or better, depending who you ask), my actual girlfriend showed up right then and she saw everything.
She didn’t get mad. She doubled over laughing.
Now she keeps calling me “Captain Smooth,” and occasionally sneaks up behind me just to whisper, “Guess who?” with a smug grin.
I may have scarred a stranger for life, but at least I gave my girlfriend a story she’ll be telling forever. Lesson learned: surprise hugs are risky business but love (and laughter) makes it all worth it.
