What It Really Means When You See a Dog Wearing Blue Gear

When you see a dog wearing blue gear—like a vest, bandana, or leash—it often signals that the dog is a service dog or in training. Service dogs help people with disabilities by guiding, alerting, or supporting mobility. Therapy dogs may also wear blue but serve emotional support roles and don’t have the same public access rights.
Blue gear can mean:
-
A working service dog on duty (don’t pet or distract).
-
A dog in training (still learning, please give space).
-
Sometimes just a stylish choice by the owner.
Other colors sometimes have meanings too:
-
Yellow = dog needs space
-
Red = do not pet
-
Green = friendly or in training
Remember to respect the dog’s role, and don’t assume every blue vest means the same thing.
