I Excluded My DIL’s Kids From My Family’s Gathering

Greta and her husband were excited to celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary surrounded by family. Their home was small, and Greta wanted the gathering to be cozy but manageable. So, when it came to her daughter-in-law and her four kids, Greta asked her to bring only one child—the youngest, a 9-year-old grandson—so there wouldn’t be too many people.

Her son quickly agreed, and the three of them came to the celebration. But Greta noticed her daughter-in-law was unusually quiet the whole evening.

The next day, Greta found a huge box at her doorstep. Inside were all her belongings from her son’s house—where she sometimes stayed—with a note that said, “You’re not welcome to stay at my house anymore.”

Shocked and hurt, Greta chose not to respond immediately, hoping to avoid making things worse. But then her grandson called her in tears, saying his parents had a terrible fight and that his dad had left.

When Greta rushed over, she found the house in chaos. Her daughter-in-law told her she wanted to leave her husband because he hadn’t stood up for her or their kids. She said Greta’s request to exclude three of her children was unacceptable and that she would never forgive her for it.

Days later, the family remained divided, and Greta was left wondering—was she to blame for the rift that tore her family apart?
