The Closet, the Tooth, and the Warning

When I first moved in with my girlfriend, she gave me the lay of the land—what was mine, what was shared, and one firm rule: don’t open the small closet in the hallway.

Naturally, I respected her boundary… for a while. But one weekend, while she was out of town visiting her family, curiosity got the better of me. The forbidden closet was practically calling my name.

Inside, I found a small, neatly wrapped box tied with old twine. I hesitated, then opened it. Inside was a soft velvet pouch. I untied it—and discovered a single human tooth and a tiny, yellowed note that simply read:
“Do not lose this again.”

I was shaken. I stared at it for a good minute, wondering if I’d just stepped into a horror film. When my girlfriend returned, I came clean immediately. She laughed.

“Oh, that?” she said casually. “I found it years ago in a vintage trunk at an estate sale. It creeped me out too much to throw away, so I kept it hidden.”

We now call it “the tooth fairy’s warning.” It still lives in that closet. And yes—I make sure the door stays closed.
