I’ve been close friends with April since college, helping plan her baby shower, suggesting names, and even making a Pinterest board for decorations. Confused and hurt, I didn’t reply. The next day, I showed up anyway—quietly, with my gift in hand. People were happy to see me, but April looked tense, whispering, “You got my message, right?” I smiled, said it must’ve been a mistake, and helped with cupcakes.
