My Daughter and Her Fiancé Left Me His 6-Month-Old Baby—Then They Disappeared

After five years of silence, my daughter Elena returned—bringing her fiancé, Darren, and his 6-month-old baby, Chloe. I barely processed their surprise arrival before waking the next day to find them gone, leaving only a note: “Sorry.”

I was stunned. They’d left Chloe with me.

Elena never told me Darren was a widower, or that he had a child. The visit had felt strange—rushed, secretive. And now, she’d vanished again, this time leaving behind someone else’s baby.

With no way to reach her, I called social services. Chloe was placed in emergency care. But then I got a call: Chloe’s mother wasn’t dead. She was alive—in a psychiatric facility.

I visited her. Jenna was fragile but sincere. She’d checked herself in after struggling with postpartum depression and losing her parents. Darren had promised to care for Chloe while she recovered. Instead, he ran off with my daughter.

I offered to care for Chloe until Jenna was well again. She accepted. Over the following year, we bonded deeply—two women brought together by heartbreak and healing.

Eventually, Jenna recovered and took Chloe home. They now live nearby and visit every Sunday. Chloe calls me Nana.

I lost my daughter in a way I still don’t fully understand. But I gained a granddaughter—and a daughter of the heart.
