They Mocked Me for Being an Assistant… Until the CEO Spoke

The office was nearly empty, the soft hum of computers filling the silence as I packed up my things. Suddenly, I heard a laugh I hadn’t heard in years—one that sent chills down my spine.

I turned, and there they were.
Mark—my ex-boyfriend. And beside him, Clara—my ex-best friend.
The same Clara who swore she’d always have my back… until I found out she was the one Mark had been secretly seeing behind mine.

“Emily? Is that you?” Mark smirked, his voice dripping with sarcasm.

Clara scanned me from head to toe, her lips curling into a mocking smile.
“So, you’re still here? Still working late nights? Still just the assistant?”

I forced a polite smile, though my heart raced.
“Yes. I’m still here.”

Mark chuckled, shaking his head. “I told you, Clara. She’d never get anywhere without me.”
They both laughed, their arrogance cutting deeper than any knife.

But before I could reply, the office door swung open.
Mr. Harris—the CEO himself—walked in.

He looked at me warmly. “Emily, are you ready for tomorrow’s big presentation? The board can’t wait to meet our new partner.”

Silence.

The smug smiles on Mark and Clara’s faces vanished instantly, replaced by shock.
Their laughter died in their throats.

And in that moment, I didn’t need to say a single word.

I wasn’t “just an assistant” anymore.
I was about to become their boss’s partner.
