When my friend invited me to dinner at a high-end steakhouse, I hesitated. I told her honestly, “I can’t spend $200 on dinner right now. I’ll just order something light.” She waved it off with a smile, insisting, “Don’t worry, it’ll be fun!”
That night, she ordered the most expensive steak on the menu — plus three sides and a fancy cocktail. I stuck to my plan: a simple salad and water. We chatted, laughed, and everything seemed fine… until the bill arrived.
Without hesitation, she looked at the waiter and said, “We’ll just split it.”
I smiled politely — but what she didn’t know was that I had already prepared for this. Earlier that day, I had called the restaurant, explained my situation, and paid for my salad in advance. The staff were kind and said they’d handle it discreetly.
So when the check came, the waiter placed two receipts on the table: one for her lavish meal and one showing that mine had already been covered. My friend’s expression shifted from confidence to confusion, and then embarrassment.
“You could’ve just told me,” she whispered.
“I did,” I replied gently. “I told you I’d only be ordering something light.”
