A Message Hidden on a Grocery Receipt

I was already halfway out of the grocery store when I realized I’d left my receipt at the self-checkout. A woman hurried after me, waving it with a warm smile. “You dropped this,” she said. I thanked her, tucked it into my bag, and went on with my day, thinking little of it.

That evening, as I unpacked groceries at home, something on the back of the receipt caught my eye. Written in quick, slanted handwriting were three words: “Check your back seat.” My heart skipped. Curiosity won over caution, and I ran outside to look.

There, tucked neatly in the corner, was my wallet—the one I’d been searching for all morning. Relief and gratitude washed over me. The stranger must have noticed it while I loaded my groceries but couldn’t catch me in time, so she left a note instead.

That simple act stayed with me. In a world that often feels rushed and distant, someone chose to notice and help without expecting anything in return. Kindness doesn’t need an audience—it sometimes arrives quietly, scribbled on the back of a receipt, restoring faith in humanity when you least expect it.
