I Skipped My Son’s Wedding—and Spent the Entire Day With His Ex-Wife.

My 25-year-old son married Tina, a sweet 23-year-old. At first, their young love seemed perfect. Then their son was born, and cracks began to show. Tina confided that my son had been unfaithful multiple times — and had proof. I felt ashamed, realizing this was not how I had raised him.

I spoke to Tina, apologizing and assuring her I would support her if she ever wanted to leave him. Despite this, she forgave him repeatedly, perhaps hoping he would change for their child.

Months later, my son casually called to announce he was filing for divorce and planning to marry someone new. When I asked why he cheated, he laughed, claiming he “deserved someone better.” His arrogance broke me.

On his wedding day, instead of attending, my husband and I went to Tina’s home. She answered the door, exhausted, holding her crying baby. We spent the day helping her with chores, caring for her baby, and providing small comforts like cookies and cake.

When my son demanded to know where we were, I told him plainly: we were at his ex-wife’s house because he had been a terrible husband, and I was ashamed of him. He hasn’t spoken to us since.

Sometimes I wonder if I overreacted, but seeing Tina—tired, hurting, yet doing her best—reminds me that our choice to stand with her was the right one.
