My neighbors and I have always been close—the kind of close where we babysit for each other, share meals when life allows, and look after each other’s homes when someone’s away. So when they left for a last-minute holiday and called asking for a favor, I didn’t hesitate.
But their request? Unexpected.
They wanted me to wrap their front door handle in aluminum foil.
I found myself on their porch, foil in hand, feeling ridiculous and wondering what anyone watching must think. Still, I wrapped the handle, my curiosity growing with every turn.
For days, I kept wondering: Was it superstition? Some odd DIY security trick? Or was I simply overthinking?
When they returned, I casually asked about it. My neighbor burst out laughing before explaining: the foil was their makeshift alarm system.
If someone tried the door while they were gone, the foil would tear or shift. Since it was still perfectly wrapped, they knew no one had come by.
I couldn’t help but laugh too. Sure, most people use cameras—but until theirs are installed, foil is their “security system.”
